‘What do you say?’ —writing instrument in hand—‘You could be holding this lovely quill, young man. Take it, if your choice is indeed to become one of over one hundred of the Governor’s indentured servant-soldiers—an engagé under the jurisdiction of some land owner in Ville-Marie.
‘Go ahead, Monsieur Aubertin,’, scourer Jérôme-Alain-de-Castonguay encouraged, ‘mark your big X on this contract—right here, if you wish to move ahead with this plan.’ —two big fingers rubbing the space upon which Louis would ink the agreement.

‘Donc, que dis-tu, Louis? Cette belle plume pourrait maintenant se faire déposer entre tes doigts. Prends-la, si tu as bien le goût de devenir un de plus qu’une centaine de serviteurs-soldats qui iront se trouver tous ce qui est prometteuse à l’autre côté de ce Grand Océan Occidental.’
‘Vas-y, Monsieur Aubertin. Marque ton X sur ce contrat. Soit ça, ou esquisse-toi une belle signature—ici, assumant que tu veux réellement prendre de l’avance avec ce plan.’, disait le recruteur qui, à l’index, frottait en rond l’espace-même où Louis devait conclure le contrat en question.
